Tuning into the still small voice of God

Don’t we live in a world that is all ‘noise’! I’m one of those people who turn the TV/radio right down when the adds come on! Think about it: there is product advertising on all media, gossip/schemes spreading behind all the scenes, loud opinions from everywhere, someone is always trying to outdo the other. Amongst all the noise, it’s hard to actually listen! This is no different when it comes to faith topics too, right?

It’s so easy for us to look online, read a commentary, or make our decisions about faith based on who we like/are familiar with, what the popular opinion is, what suits us the most, or whatever makes us feel the best.
Amongst the ‘noise’ of Christianity too, how do we really hear God’s voice?

I really like this verse in 1 Kings 19 where God is speaking to Elijah:

1 Kings 19:11-12
Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.

It says that God did not speak to Elijah in the noise, but in a still small voice.

Many people don’t know how to hear the voice of God like Elijah did. But actually, isn’t this physical example from the Old Testament to help us understand the spiritual way God speaks to us in the New Testament? What is this way? Please read this verse with me:

2 Tim 3:16-17
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Yes, the breath (voice) of God is found in the scriptures.

It is here that we can hear what God wants us to know about him, the world, ourselves. It is in the scriptures that he pours out his heart to show us his love, sacrifices and the true will that he has for us.

So, amongst all the voices, opinions, books, preachers, posters, social media posts is the Bible that so many have, yet so many do not read and/or understand. Isn’t this though how we are to tune into the still small voice of God?

We all know that to listen to God is what is good and right for us. We also all chase after it by praying, worshipping, fasting etc….

But God is just there, in the Bible (John 1:1). He is waiting to speak to us too….if only we would seek his word and listen!

Isn’t the importance of hearing God’s still small voice from within the Bible repeated to us in many other scriptures too?

Prov 2:1-5
My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding—
indeed, if you call out for insight
    and cry aloud for understanding,
and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
then you will understand the fear of the LORD
and find the knowledge of God.

John 14:21, 23-24
Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.
…Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

For me, when I read and meditate on the Bible, it feels like God is speaking from His heart to mine. It’s like a precious inner conversation where God shares His highest teachings with me, and where I reflect, praise him, and humble myself to follow Him.

Truly, I feel a deep sense of connection with God this way. It’s humbling to hear the voice of the almighty God speak to me through the Bible and to realise he is with me and cares for me.

  1. A beautiful post. I hadn't perceived how God spoke to Elijah in a still, small voice according to the scriptures. Thank you for another insightful and educational post.
