The Spiritual Battle Within Us
The topic of the spiritual
battle within us (also known as spiritual warfare), is something that all go
through but not many understand. As a wife, mother, school teacher, and church
home group leader, friend, I see it so clearly in all of us. If you have read
my testimony blog, you would see I have experienced many years of being
overcome in this spiritual war, and it’s not fun.
I know that physical and
spiritual suffering is not what God intended for us (Lam 3:33). I spent many
years fighting what seemed like a losing battle because I didn’t understand
what spiritual warfare was, how it worked; I knew that God was greater and
stronger, but I didn’t know how to activate the power and authority of God over
my life to be able to fight and overcome. Thankfully, through the Word I was
able to learn and become equipped finally!
This is a deep and complex
topic, and many will have their own thoughts and opinions. However as a member
of Shincheonji, we always strive to have our knowledge and faith about
spiritual things based on the Word of God. The Word is what God has given us to
know about spiritual things because we as humans cannot see spirit and
therefore also cannot comprehend the ways of the spirit (both good and evil).
In this blog post I would like to share with you some points about spiritual
warfare that we can understand through the scriptures so you can know what God
says about it. I hope this will help you to have better spiritual awareness and
wisdom of how God can indeed really help you and have you win in the battle
over Satan, sin and evil!
- We have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23)
- We have become corrupt in our thoughts, desires and actions (Eph 4:22-25)
We face spiritual warfare because our sin and sinful ways allow Satan to have a foothold in us
- Keeps a person away from God’s Word (1 John 3:4)
- Makes a person scatter from true life of faith (Matt 12:30)
- Makes them believe lies (John 8:44), and have arrogant thoughts towards God’s words/ways (Ps 10:4)
- Makes one have an emotions-driven character (Eph 4:31, Col 3:5-10)
- For some, Satan’s spirit can manifest in ways that torment a person (1 Sam 16:14)
- Ultimately, Satan is the one who opposes God and aims to steal, kill and destroy to keep people away from God too (John 10:10)
Satan’s spirit uses the thoughts, desires and standards of the world to keep a person from fully knowing and obeying God.
God created man in his image and likeness (Gen 1:26) and in order to keep that image and likeness, God told man to obey his commands so that they would remain in him and not fall into sin (Gen 2:17). God said that what he created originally was “good”, there was no evil. Think about what pure happiness and Joy Adam and Eve would have felt, about how free they would be in their health, their thoughts, their motives. Think about the total love, respect and peace they would have felt between themselves and towards all other creation too.
Mankind remained in God’s
image and likeness, and all remained good, when they obeyed God’s Word.
And if we are careful to obey all this law before the LORD our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness.
Ps 25:10
All the ways of the LORD
are loving and faithful toward those who keep the demands of his covenant.
However when mankind strayed from God’s Word, this was when they became weak and couldn’t overcome their temptation, therefore sinned.
Because of the disobedience of mankind, the world became wicked; sin and evil filled the earth. Before sin, Adam and Eve never knew evil, pain or death. However after sin, mankind came to know well about suffering and death. (Gen 6:3-6, 1 John 5:19)
Our thoughts are good and evil today, ourselves and the world are suffering in pain, sickness, separation and death. We long for God, for freedom, peace and love, but we fall for the fake version of this, or only experience this temporarily. The battle internally and eternally between good and evil is a daily one.
Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.
How do we take away Satan’s foothold in our lives? Let’s read this verse to hear what God says:
Eph 4:17-25
That, however, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.
Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.
- Gospel of peace – Gospel = the teaching or revelation of Christ
- Shield of faith – Rom 10:17 faith comes from hearing the Word of Christ
- Helmet of salvation – 1 Tim 2:4 one who comes to a knowledge of the truth is saved
- Sword of the spirit – Eph 6:17 sword of the spirit is the word of truth
-Man Hee Lee, Chairman of Shincheonji
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
