The world’s largest theological graduation ceremony of over 100,000 graduates commemorated with an exhibition in Auckland

On Saturday 3rd December 2022, Shincheonji Church of Jesus held two free photo exhibitions in Auckland to commemorate their recent theology school graduates. The 106,186 graduates gathered both at the Daegu stadium in South Korea and via livestream from many cities around the world, including New Zealand. This graduation being the world’s largest graduation from any single theology school, is a significant event that is catching the attention of the religious world, including in New Zealand where interest in Shincheonji is growing.

The exhibition photos displayed the grand scale of the event as well as close up photos of the Chairman, the performances, and the representative graduate who shared his testimony from the crowd. The passionate testimony shared was from a pastor who was also graduating that day. In fact, amongst the graduates there were 522 pastors who were celebrating having become more equipped to share the complete meaning of the Christian Bible with their congregation. A Shincheonji representative says that the number of pastors graduating increased significantly this year compared to other years. In 2022 alone, Shincheonji signed 4,300 MOUs and MOAs with pastors and organizations who were confident to partner with Shincheonji. Multiple MOUs have been signed in New Zealand and Australia to date.

The Ellen Melville Centre was the location of the free all-day public exhibition in Auckland, where spectators were able to view 50 photos on display. The graduation recording was replaying on the projector screen throughout the day, and registrations for the next intake of the same bible course that the graduates had completed was available too. There is an active online theology school of Shincheonji in New Zealand that has seen a few hundred students being taught in 2022 from New Zealand and Samoa too. Those who register for the course before February 2023 and complete the 3-part course with its associated bible exams will then be able to graduate in a similar manner the following year.

Friends and family of those belonging to Shincheonji church as well as many walks-ins from the public took an interest in Saturdays event. Many visitors commented that although they haven’t heard of Shincheonji Church of Jesus before, they can see that the church is very passionate about what they believed in and must be doing something right to have that many graduates in just one year. Many other spectators who attend church themselves admitted that numbers in their own churches have seemed to decrease within the Covid-19 period, and were shocked to see how it was possible to have such a large graduation from one denomination in only one year.

There was also an exhibition presentation held especially for pastors at Shincheonji’s place of worship in Grafton where approximately 20 pastors joined, including those who watched the live-streaming from Samoa. The purpose of this additional exhibition for pastors was to gain and understanding of each other’s churches and ministries and to build friendship connections whereby mutual support of each other’s churches through an MOU agreement was encouraged. There were hosts from Shincheonji who shared about the organization, its history, what it stands for and the efforts for good in the world they are trying to achieve. There were discussions prompting the guest pastors to share about their own church as well as to share thoughts about the hopes and goals they would like to achieve and the growth they would like to see amongst the wider Christian community too.

Both events were hosted online for pastors and guests from New Zealand and Samoa.

A representative of Shincheonji Church of Jesus shared that promoting the 100,000 graduation event and hosting these photo exhibitions this weekend was a way to help achieve a revival in the churches and provide a platform to share the word of God actively. “Shincheonji recognizes that there a lot of pastors in New Zealand and Samoa working diligently to serve their church communities with a sincere heart, and if were to work together more, a greater result in local communities can be achieved”, she said.

Shincheonji Church of Jesus and its theology school, the Zion Christian Mission Centre, has been established in New Zealand since 2015 and this year have also seen a huge growth in students participate in its free 10-month bible course that is available for both New Zealand and Samoan residents. Among the students are believers from all walks of faith, denominations, as well as pastors and theology students. Shincheonji is dedicated to share the word of God through its courses to those seeking to learn and grow in the truth. In addition to the impressive graduation event, Shincheonji has also made efforts to serve the community through volunteer work. A notable volunteer effort being its blood donation drive that achieved a Guinness world record for the most blood donation pledges to be made within a 24 hour period.

It is likely that Shincheonji will continue hosting various exhibitions regularly in the future too.

  2. A beautiful and hopeful post. 106,186 graduates have now mastered the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation in 2022 and is 2,422 people more than the 103,764 graduates of 2019. Surely it’s only by God’s power that this can be possible.
