NZ Food Showcase: The Classic Kiwifruit

Today’s feature NZ food item:

🔹 Kiwifruit 🔹

These food blog posts are all about showcasing the food that contributes to the everyday Kiwi cuisine!
I share the food that we are familiar with, the brands that I recommend, and the ways to enjoy each food so that you can know all about the authentic Kiwi food experience too!

🌻Description:

This tangy fruit is oval in shape, a bit larger than an egg in size. On the outside it has a fury rough skin, but on the inside it is a bright green edible berry fruit! It has a sweet and slightly tart taste with a bit of a crunch from its many (edible) black seeds.

🌻How to eat it:

The kiwifruit is best eaten when it is slightly less than firm to squeeze. You can eat the whole thing as it is, remove the skin and cut it up, or just cut it in half and scoop it out from each half!

It is often just eaten on its own, but also appears in a fruit salad or desert at times too.

🌻Where can it be purchased:

Your local supermarket (I like Countdown!)

🌻Cost (at time of purchase):

$4.49 / kg (at the time of purchase)

🌻How it has become a food item familiar to the NZ lifestyle:

The kiwifruit has been a part of the NZ food scene since the 1940’s and is one of the common all-round fruits available in the NZ supermarkets. It is known to help digestion, and has properties that are helpful within skincare and supplements too.

The word “kiwi” can either refer to the kiwifruit itself or the kiwi bird that is native and iconic to NZ. Also, you may have heard it used as a nickname when referring to someone from NZ. The kiwifruit is referred to as a Chinese gooseberry or a Zespri outside of NZ.
